Garcinia cambogia

Resumen

Atualmente, a obesidade é um problema de saúde pública mundial, tanto nos países desenvolvidos como nos em desenvolvimento, apresentando elevação de sua prevalência. A transição nutricional é um processo de modificações seqüenciais no padrão de nutrição e consumo que acompanha mudanças econômicas, sociais e demográficas, e mudanças do perfil de saúde das populações. Este trabalho objetiva abordar a comprovação científica dos medicamentos fitoterápicos à base de extrato de Garcinia cambogia Roxb comercializados livremente, visando ao tratamento da obesidade. Utilizou-se a pesquisa bibliográfica, nas bases de dados Medline e Highwire Press, para obter informações sobre o uso dos fitoterápicos no tratamento da obesidade. O extrato de garcínia é obtido do pericarpo de seus frutos, sendo que o principal constituinte químico é o (-)-hidroxicítrico (HCA) que inibe competitivamente a enzima extramitocondrial citrato-liase que catalisa a clivagem do citrato em acetil CoA e oxaloacetato, um passo fundamental na lipogênese e sua administração mostrou inibição significativa das taxas de lipogênese tanto in vivo como in vitro em fígado de roedor, tecido adiposo e intestino delgado, mas isto não foi confirmado em humanos. No entanto, a única aplicabilidade do HCA como agente anti-obesidade parece ser a redução do apetite e ingestão de alimentos, pois o mesmo apresentou efeito anorexígeno. Para que o HCA se qualifique como um agente metabólico efetivo anti-obesidade, deveria produzir um efeito estimulante sobre músculo esquelético, sobre a oxidação da gordura total ou sobre o consumo de calorias, mas isto ainda não foi provado.
