Abstract

Ginkgo biloba L., a plant species from the family Ginkgoaceae, has been described concerning its therapeutical uses since 2800 bC, and its extract coded as EGb 761 has been traded for over two decades. This survey aimed to assemble evidences on the effects of EGb 761 extract on prophylaxis and therapeutics o ischemia, published along the last five years. In this extract, Flavonoids has been associated with the antioxidant and the anti-free-radical actions, preventing oxidative damage by reperfusion after ischemia, besides improving brain metabolism. Terpenoid markers have been associated with heart protective, acting together with flavonoids. Bilobalides has been cited as responsible by neuronal protection, and by the prevention of ischemic damage. Ginkgolides may be indicated in the inflammation treatment, transplant rejection, asthma, by means of an antioxidant mechanism, and in ischemic damages as antagonist of the Platlet Aggregation Factor – PAF.
