Abstract

During a year, about 17 million peoples dye in the world, victims of cardiovascular and coronarian diseases, and in Brazil they are responsible for over 30% of deaths, mainly at the ages over 64th, when it reaches near 47,1%. Dislipemies are on the causes involved in cardiovascular disorder morbidity, and therefore they attract attention to the development of new drugs applicable to these needs of therapeutic treatment. Annato, a natural plant dying material from Bixa orellana L. (Bixaceae), widely used as a food colorant, has been indicated as a hipolipidemic agent. In this revision paper, we investigate the scientific basis for that indication, as well as we analyze the available data about some other pharmacological and toxicological effects of the annatto.
