Germination and early growth of roma tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.)
effects of photoperiod
Abstract
Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., known as roma or bangalore tomatoes, belongs to the family Solanaceae, specially cultivated for food as juice, dressing or in natura. Due to the growing importance to agriculture and trade interest, its germination has been studied, therefore, in order to analyze the best conditions of germination and development of the plantlets. This study aimed to analyze the effects of light on germination of S. lycopersicum seeds, subjecting them to different photoperiod treatments: 24 hours of light, 24 hours of dark, 8 hours light/16 hours dark and 16 hours light/8 hours dark. A bigger radicular development was noticed in seeds exposed to longer periods of luminosity. The rate of germination was not significantly different, since the seeds germinated equally in all treatments. However, the 16:08 treatment showed a difference in the seeds morphology, in which they have remained in the juvenile stage for, apparently, prioritize evapotranspiration.
