Abstract

The pollination and seed dispersal of Dyssochroma viridiflora (Sims) Miers (Solanaceae) were studied in the Parque Nacional da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro state, Southeastern Brazil, between January 2001 and February 2003. This species has a hemiepiphytic habit, pendulous flowers, green color, with nocturnal anthesis, pollinated by Anoura caudifer (É. Geoffroy, 1818) (Phyllostomidae). The experiments for determining the reproductive system revealed that the species is self-incopatibility and require cross-pollination made by A. caudifer to fruit production. As becoming ripe, the fruits are eaten by bats Carollia perspicillata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Phyllostomidae) and Sturnira lilium (É. Geoffroy, 1810) (Phyllostomidae) and both species can act as seed dispersers.
