The use of green tea, Camellia sinensis L. (Theaceae) in topical products – a review
uma revisão
Abstract
A bibliographical review on recent researches highlights the benefits of green tea to human health. Obtained from the plant Camellia sinensis and consumed mostly in eastern countries, green tea is rich in polyphenols, especially catechins the (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate which seems to be the active component. Clinical research point out the chemoprotector and photoprotector effects of the green tea and relate its activity to slowing the process of aging by having antioxidant activities, fighting free radicals, disabling induction, beginning, advance and promotion of carcinogenesis, antiinflamatory, anti-angiogenesis, disabling metalloproteinases, protector of the conversion of benign and malignant cells and disabling the damage to the DNA. It is settled then that there is the necessity of deeper scientifical research, especially in the area of Molecular Biology, so that these activities have their mechanisms of action proven.
