Coproparasitological evaluation of Chelonoidis carbonaria, Spix, 1824 (Reptilia, Testudinidae) in captivity in the Espírito Santo
Abstract
Wild animals are kept in captivity and living with humans for a long time and considerable advances have occurred in the care and management of these, but notes for more research involving their infectious and parasitic diseases are necessary. The correct handling of animals in captivity and parasite control is needed at high risk of transmission of diseases, especially zoonoses. Typically, the above parasitic infection is asymptomatic, but in poor hygiene parasitic diseases lead to anorexia, weight loss, decreased appetite and stress. The objective of the research was to determine the main parasites found in turtles that are kept in captivity in CEREIAS Project – Aracruz (ES). Evaluations were made using two different techniques, Willis Ritchie, resulting in 73 positive animals and 22 animals negatives, while the fluctuation were 31 positive and 64 negatives. Eggs and larvas of nematodes, cestodes and coccidia were found. The results obtained during the experiment showed that both techniques should be used routinely in parasite control of these animals in captivity.
