Incidence of mortality due to systemic lupus erythematosus in Brazil and the population's perception of the disease
Abstract
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory disease of autoimmune bases, known to affect different parts of the body, including the skin, joints, heart and kidneys, which can cause several complications that impact on quality of life of patients. To carry out a survey of data on deaths from SLE in Brazil as well as to analyze the population’s perception of the disease. The study consists of a cross-sectional, descriptive and qualitative research of data obtained through the Informatics Department of the Unified Health System, related to the number of deaths from the disease. An online concept was also applied through the Google Forms Platform to assess the perception of respect for the disease; and based on the results, health education on SLE was promoted through a digital booklet. 10,230 SLE deaths were identified in Brazil between 2010 and 2020, with an estimated incidence of 5.03 deaths/100,000 inhabitants; in relation to the questionnaire, from the analysis of the 98 responses obtained, it could be seen that although most participants had already heard about lupus, their knowledge about the disease is still low. Based on this, with the intention of promoting health education, a digital booklet with information about the disease was prepared and made available. This study identified the need to carry out more epidemiological studies on SLE in Brazil, mainly outside the Southeast region, in order to highlight the reality of the disease in the country. In addition, it was concluded that the adoption of continuous health promotion programs, as well as the carrying out of studies that promote health education actions, are essential in the formation of the population’s critical thinking on this subject
