Development of anatomical toothbrush for people with disabilities
Abstract
People with Disabilities (PcD) may present oral diseases more frequently, such as caries and gingivitis, which is justified by the inability to oral hygiene, either due to physical difficulty, fine or even cognitive motor skills and, often, by the ne-gligence of their caregivers and/or guardians. Although there is a diversity of toothbrushes in the Brazilian market, none of them are directed to the pcd public. Electric brushes are indicated, as they usually do not require the need for complex brushing movements, however, due to the high cost, they become unfeasible for low-income people. An alternative is the adaptations made in hand brushes by the profes-sionals themselves or family members. The toothbrush handle is customized with stacks of vanes, physiotherapy ball, bicycle handle, nail brush cable and, day-to-day easeand cable thickeners. Given the assumption, a manual prototype of a toothbrush for PcD was developed that will facilitate both the grip and the performance of oral hygiene, making them more inde-pendent to exercise their self-care and, thus, prevent oral diseases.
