Prevalence of sporotrichosis in the central mountain region: an overview of the years 2018 to 2022
Abstract
Human sporotrichosis is an infectious disease caused by the dimorphic fungus Sporothrix schenckii. The disease stands out as the most relevant subcutaneous mycosis in Latin America and the most prevalent in the world. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sporotrichosis in the Centro Serrana region in the last five years, as well as to evaluate the perception of the population living in the study municipalities. To carry it out, data collected from the city halls of each municipality was used, along with the application of a questionnaire. Through the data obtained, it was possible to observe an underreporting of cases of sporotrichosis during the corresponding years and a lack of information among the population about human sporotrichosis was also noted, since 51.8% of volunteers were unaware of the disease and around 64.1% were unable to answer whether it was reported in their municipality. In this sense, it is possible to point out that understanding the disease and collecting data are essential for applying a correct prognosis, therefore the importance of implementing health education for the population through campaigns and planning interventions that guarantee the control and prevention of sporotrichosis.
