Floral visitors of the ornamental plant Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M.Sm. (Zingiberaceae), the torch ginger, in an urban green area, the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, RJ
Abstract
The exotic specie Etlingera elatior (Jack) R.M.Sm. originally from Asia was introduced in Brazil over 50 years ago, and has being grown in large scale as an ornamental plant. For an effective pollination in its original area, external agents are necessary, mostly birds and some few insects. In order to study E. elatior’s floral visitors frequency, observations were made in plants grown in Rio de Janeiro‘s Botanical Garden, an urban green area next to the Atlantic Forest. During the observations, 17 taxa were identified belonging to eight orders: Apodiformes (Aves), Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, Lepidoptera, Orthoptera, and Thysanoptera (Insecta). There were a total of 257 visitors to E. elatior flowers. The only bird, an native hummingbird, Thalurania glaucopis (Gmelin, 1788) (Apodiformes: Trochilidae) did 29 visitations (11,3%), representatives of five native bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) among them Trigona spinipes (Fabricius, 1793) (53,7%) and Eulaema (Apeulaema) sp. (18,6%) totalled 215 visitations (83,6%), standing out from others that all together represented 5,1% of all visitations.
