The diet of Trichomycterus longibarbatus Costa, 1992, and Pimelodella transitoria Miranda Ribeiro, 1905 (Siluriformes)
a case of interspecific competition
Abstract
The analysis of the diets of fish is important for studies of predation, competition and the aquatic food chain. The aim of this study was to identify the diet of two species of catfish associated with submerged litter stream of Yellow Wood, REBIO de Duas Bocas. The species Trichomycterus longibarbatus and Pimelodella transitoria were captured with the aid of a sieve and their stomach contents were analyzed and identified up to the lower taxonomic level. The food items found were Chironomidae and Odonate, being the latter exclusive to T. longibarbatus. So there is a competition for resource exploitation of Chironomidae. The species P. transitoria showed a high degree of parasitism which is influenced by water stress and nutrition.
