Abstract

Emerita brasiliensis, the tatui, can be found at the inter tidal levels of sand beaches. The aim of this study was to investigate the influences of tides in the abundance of the species, besides studying the abundance at different points in Praia do Morro, Guarapari-ES, over the circadian cycle (24 hours). The study was conducted on May 30 and 31 (neap tide) and on June 06 and 07 (spring tide) at Praia do Morro, Guarapari, Espírito Santo, Brazil. The collection was made in the intertidal region, at 4 meters from the line of breaking waves, where 3 points of collections were placed. There were 5 samples at each point, equidistant 10 m with a Corer of 18 cm diameter and 12 cm high, and they were collected every 4 to 4 hours. The results showed that 281 individuals were found: 43 individuals in the neap tide and 238 individuals in the spring tide. At neap tide the highest average abundance was in the P2 at 0 hours with a value of 1.3. At spring tide the highest average abundance was at P3 at 16 hours with a value of 10.8, and the difference in abundance between the two tides was a notable. There were differences in abundance along the beach, where P3 stood out in two tides. The abundance was higher in the spring tide, difference between the two tide collections were noted.
