Abstract

The Laboratory of Veterinary Anatomy and Zoology at the University of Vila Velha (UVV ) have shown a strong demand for quality anatomical specimens for use in practical classes in the study of osteology. The aim of this study was to analyze the alternative methods of preparation of anatomical specimens for educational use. In this case, by means of utilization of Leurolestes circunvagans, a carrion insect, Leurolestes circunvagans, from Blattodea Family Species, shortening the preparation time of biological material to be studied, producing better quality parts and reducing the production of environmental wastes at the end of the traditional process of maceration. The study was conducted using the dependencies of the complex activities of Bioagrary Complex fo the University of Vila Velha (UVV ), using wild specimens caught on the highway ES-060 that were collected by the concessionaire Rodosol, and experimental animals (Rattus novergicus Wistar lineage) previously euthanized, for the preparation of anatomical specimens. Taking the end of maceration process as a reference, the anatomical peaces that were under scavenging effect had shown better quality compared to traditional maceration, resulting in cleaner specimens, with less damage in their structure, and also reducing waste. With the successful establishment of insect individuals surpluses are used as source of food for insectivorous species of wild animals admitted to the Veterinary Hospital Prof. Ricardo Alexandre Hippler, originated from the same accident, which some animals used in this study were killed.
