Abstract

Couepia paraensis (Mart. & Zucc.) Benth. subsp. paraensis, known locally as uchirana, is an evergreen tree easily found in seasonally flooded areas in the Amazon region. This study characterizes the morphology and leaf anatomy of C. paraensis subsp. paraensis, collecter in the igapó forest in Tupé Sustainable Development Reserve, Manaus – AM, providing diagnostic characters for the species. Usual techniques for morphological and anatomical studies were used, such as analysis of leaf cross sections and dissociated cuts from the middle third of the leaf blade. The species has simple, entire, alternate, ovate to oblong leaves, with two glands at the base of the blade, stipules only in the younger branches. The petiole is concave on the adaxial face and convex on the abaxial surface. The mesophyll is dorsiventral, with uniseriate epidermis, palisade and spongy parenchyma defined. The leaf structure presents scleromorphic features like sheath extensions of the vascular bundles, which provide strength and a thick cuticle, which acts as a physical barrier. Leaf characters are effective for recognition in the absence of floral characters.
