Reproductive biology and pollination of Gesneriaceae from Brazil
a literature review
Abstract
It is presented the information concerning the reproductive biology and pollination of species of Gesneriaceae, with emphasis on the Brazilian species. Most information is given in to the genera and Sinningia, Vanhouttea and Paliavana. Species of Gesneriaceae are mostly pollinated by hummingbirds, although other groups such as bats and bees, can be seen participating in this process. It is noted that each species has floral traits related to a group of pollinator, however these characteristics does not prevent the occasional visit of visitors from different groups. Most of the studies conducted so far refer to the species from the southeast region. It is suggested that studies in other regions such as the Amazon.
