Population ecology of Emerita brasiliensis SCHIMITT, 1935 (Crustacea, Hippidae) of a stretch of the Itapoã beach, Vila Velha, Espírito Santo, Brazil

Abstract

Emerita brasiliensis was been study the population density, female/male relation, breeding, secular distribution and the morfometry. The study was done between the period of April 2004 through March 2005, except in the months of September and October, in the Itapoã beach. The collections was performed in 11 points through out 200 m of beach, in one transect parallel of the shoreline in the zone intertides, using as delimitaded area on square meter side. The months July and August it was the biggest abundance, 86 and 78 individuals respectively. The population average density found for period of sampling was of 3,42 individual/ m². The female/male sexual reason found was 2,3:1. The eggs average for female spawning was 5914 eggs. The carapace length (Cc) average was 11,1 mm in the females, ovigerous was 27,2 mm, and for the males was 7 mm. A decreasing trend in the average of the length was observed April/2004 through July/2004 with a stable situation after August/2004 through March/2005, been the ovigerous females one of the factors for this distribution. In relation to the collection points, increasing tendancy of Cl was observed through point 11, but the smaller individuals it was found through point 1.
