Abstract

New sources of substrate to orchids are required in order to substitute the traditional xaxim substrate. For this purpose, wood from Eucalyptus and Pinus become attractive. However, the extrac-tives from those wood plants, responsible for smell, taste, color and defense, can inhibit the develop-ment of orchid symbiont fungi. This work reports the chemical characterization of extractives of the-se plants and their biological activity against Trichoderma sp. and a Rhizoctonia isolates, important orchid symbionts. The main chemical compounds were linoleic and oleic acids, found in Pinus, and β-sitosterol in Eucalyptus. The extractives displayed no biological activity against the tested organisms, and one can conclude that Pinus and Eucaplyptus wood present good potential as orchid substrates.
